In the early 1900s Major League teams frequently played exhibition games against college and minor league teams. In Ottumwa, three of these were held. National and international tours were also common. Two Major League teams would travel for several weeks to various cities playing each other. Tours were great for the local fans who would not have been able to see their heroes play without modern conveniences like televison, radio, and computers. The Chicago White Sox played the Giants in Ottumwa during the 1913 season.
